Colombia river

Below is a petition to remove the dams on the Snake river, a tributary of the Colombia. The petition is to President Biden and other northwest leaders calling for the removal of several dams on the lower Snake river to restore salmon and orca populations as well as honoring tribal rights and leadership

One of the greatest actions to restore the population of southern resident orcas would be to restore their food supply. The leading threat to the survival of the Chinook salmon is the massive dams on most of the major rivers that the salmon rely on for spawning grounds. There have been some dam removal projects along some rivers in the area such as the Elwha dam. On the Snake river, a tributary of the Columbia river basin, there is a call for the removal of 4 dams in order to restore salmon populations and help the ecosystem thrive once again. The project would require congressional legislation and cost approximately 33.5 billion USD (Flatt, 2021). Dam removal projects have seen great success with restoring salmon populations, within a couple of years salmon runs multiply exponentially once the rivers have been cleared.
