Southern Resident Orcas

Saving the Southern Resident Orcas

Southern Resident Orcas are a subpopulation of the orca species. Orcas are the largest of members within the dolphin species. There are three different families within the Southern Resident Orca population which have been deemed J, K & L pods. The L pod is the largest with the most mature whales within the population. Then, the J pod is seen most frequently around the San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound and finally, the K pod is seen more towards outer Oregon and the Washington Coast. Unlike their cousins, the transient population, which eats seals and sea lions, the Southern Resident Orcas consume fish, specifically Chinook Salmon.

There are currently 73 remaining southern resident orcas

About

Who are we?

Hana Moore & Nate Wolford

As students of the upperclassman high school small learning community SEA-DISC (Students of the Environment Academy - Doing Interdisciplinary Studies Curricula) at Archie Williams High school, we are working towards finding solutions to big environmental and social justice problems in the world. Focusing on endangered species around the world we hope to bring light to some of the issues leading to endangerment, as well as potential solutions to help rehabilitate these majestic species.
