Who am I?

The World's Fastest Whale

“There are around 8,600 sei whales in the North Pacific. This is only a little more than 20% of the original population estimate of 42,000 for this area” (NOAA Fisheries, 2019).

Sei Whale

While the sei whale may not have the same aesthetic value as a puppy would, it is quite a majestic animal, spanning from 12 to 18 meters long.

And yet, for such a large animal, it is surprising how few people have heard of the sei whale, let alone how endangered the sei whale is.

The sei whale, while not as well known as other sea creatures like otters or seals, plays an important role in the ocean ecosystem.

The sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) had an estimated population size of about 152,000 (WWF, 2020). However, in more recent days, the sei whale only has an estimated population of 50,000 whales (IUCN).

“There are around 8,600 sei whales in the North Pacific. This is only a little more than 20% of the original population estimate of 42,000 for this area” (NOAA Fisheries, 2019).

One may think that it’s okay to lose a couple species, that it won’t affect us. However, it will. As John Muir once said, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.”
