Causes of Endangerment

As the Malagasy Frog faces endangerment there are a few main causes to their continuous population loss.

The main causes of endangerment are the Illegal Animal Trade, the mining industry, and the threat of climate change. The Malagasy frog is a very colorful and vibrant frog which leads it to be found being sold on the black market (National, 2021). The illegal trade of the frog has been a huge contribution to the endangerment of this species. They are very exotic-looking and therefore very attractive to buyers (National, 2021). The frog's habitat is also being condensed due to logging and mining (Gone, 2020). This specific frog is a very range-restricted species and can be found across a range of 983 km2 within the Isalo Massif in southwestern Madagascar (IUCN, 2016). Its habitat is also under fire from the recent sapphire mining activities that have begun to destroy habitat near Isalo Massif. Tourists around this area have increase which may continue to disturb their population (National, 2021).
