Glossary

Amphibians - a cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that comprises the frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders. They are distinguished by having an Aquatic Gill-breathing larval stage followed (typically) by a terrestrial lung-breathing adult stage.

Black Market - illegal traffic or trade in officially controlled or scarce commodities.

​

Climate change - a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

​

Deciduous Forests - ​​a forest with trees that shed their leaves annually.

​

Ecological - relating to or concerned with the relation of living organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.

​

Endangered - (of a species) seriously at risk of extinction.

​

Exotic - attractive or striking because colorful or out of the ordinary.

​

Fluctuate - rise or fall irregularly in a number or amount

​

Indicator Species - an animal or plant species that can be used to infer conditions in a particular habitat.

​

Isalo Massif - A national park in Madagascar where the Malagasy Rainbow frogs reside.

It is located just off the coast of South Africa.

Kermit the Frog - A frog puppet from the show Muppets.

​

Madagascar - The country in which the Malagasy Rainbow Frog resides. Madagascar is an island off the southern coast of Africa.

​

Malagasy Rainbow Frog - A frog found in the Isalo National Park of Madagascar.

​

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund - The non-profit organization devoted to saving the Malagasy Rainbow frog.

​

National Parks - a scenic or historically important area of countryside protected by the federal government for the enjoyment of the general public or the preservation of wildlife.

​

Range Restricted - unable to be mobile, having a limited living space.

​

Reproduce -(of an organism) produce offspring by a sexual or asexual process.

​

Rocky Areas - an area consisting or full of rocks.

​

Sapphire mining - the act of mining sapphires, which has harmful environmental impacts.

​

Species - a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomial.

​

Vertebrates - an animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.

​

Vibrant - (of color) bright and striking.

​

Vicinity - the area near or surrounding a particular place. 

​

Wet Season - The months in which it rains

​

Wetlands - land consisting of marshes or swamps; saturated land.

​

Waterways - river, canal, or stream, a water route that can be traveled and navigated.
