About the Frog

The Malagasy Rainbow Frog is native to Isalo National Park, within the beautiful country of Madagascar (Gone, 2020). This frog is known for its beautiful colors. This frog lives within deciduous forests, wetlands, and rocky areas of the national park (National, 2021). They require dry and humid vegetation in local canyons and shelter by burrowing into sand or sticking to the undersides of boulders. This animal requires an extensive wet season in the months of December and January, where they will have three days after the rain in order to reproduce. The female frog produces around 1,000 eggs which require fertilization from the males (Gone, 2020). Once fertilized, the tadpoles will develop for one to two months, feeding uniquely with their head sticking in the bottom of the sand of the waterways they reside in. They feed off of local insects and other smaller vertebrates living in their vicinity (Trip, 2021).

This need for immense precipitation in order to reproduce is being negatively affected by climate change (National, 2021). With the rainy season starting to fluctuate, these frogs' reproductive season is being cut down. We need to take action in things we can control to protect these frogs from extinction (National, 2021).
