  • Protect and restore habitat - some laws have been put in place but not enough

  • Conserve existing Macquarie Perch - it is illegal to fish the Macquarie Perch

  • Establish more Macquarie within natural levels

  • Fishing impacts are minimized - this has been started but fish are still being killed 

  • Protect fish, priority habitat rehabilitation and enhancement - there hasn’t been any effort to help rehabilitate the habitat and ecosystem

  • bring back more riparian vegetation

  • Investing in greener technology such as electric cars and solar panels to help mitigate climate change

  • Support local ecosystems and biodiversity because even though you can’t directly help the Macquarie perch our whole planet is a web of ecosystems and need each other

  • Make your voice heard, spread the word about the Macquarie Perch (National, 2018)

Current Solutions

Macquarie Perch is completely protected, illegal to catch, keep, sell, buy or harm. Protected under Victorian Flora (National, 2018). 

 

According to the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy “The Macquarie Perch Recovery Team has the responsibility of providing advice and coordinating and directing the implementation of the recovery actions outlined in this recovery plan. The membership of the recovery team may include individuals with relevant responsibility and expertise from The Department of the Environment and Energy” 

More laws put in place

  • Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Commonwealth)

  • Endangered Fisheries Management Act 1994 (New South Wales)

  • Endangered Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 (Victoria)

  • Threatened Nature Conservation Act 2014 (Australian Capital Territory): Endangered. Acts are enforced by the Australian government (National, 2018)
