Macquarie Perch - Macquaria australasica

Bring back the Mac! Macquarie Perch is an important species of fish located in Australia. While these fish may not be the most exciting to look at, they have huge impacts on the freshwater ecosystems and the biodiversity. Macquarie Perch is an endangered species of fish according to the IUCN red list. They are mainly found in the Cooler upper reaches of Murray-Darling basin, New South Wales, Australia (Macquarie, 2021). While this species may not be as majestic as snow leopards, they are still endangered and they need your help to survive and thrive!

The Macquarie returns upstream to spawn. They lay their adhesive eggs on gravel with fast-moving water (Species, 2021). This is a fish native to Australia that has been there for over 600,000 years (Diggles, 2013). Unfortunately, the disruption of waterways like dams and extreme weather eliminates their spawning habitat. Macquarie perch are beautiful creatures with the mobility to make fast quick turns and thrive on this planet but we are making that very hard for them to do (Macquarie, 2021).
