POLLUTION

The Bog Turtle Needs a Solution to Pollution!

Pollution to our planet and wetlands is impacting the Bog Turtle. The pollution of waterways is especially grave since it impacts water quality for the Bog Turtle. We must not let pollution get in the way of this species’ survival. Their habitat is threatened by pollution, which is severely impacting these cute freshwater turtles by leaving toxins in their water supply, harming their food as well as themselves. The upsurge of roads running through their habitats is a major contributor to the pollution that Bog Turtles face because of runoff. Runoff from roads can include oil, pesticides, fertilizer, litter, antifreeze, and rubber/metal fragments (DefendersofWildlife, 2019).

The sediment in wetlands is prone to collecting pollution because one of its crucial ecosystem services is to purify water. This means that as a thank you to the wetlands for cleaning our water, humans are throwing more and more disgusting oil slicks and litter, which are poisoning the delicate Bog Turtle ecosystem (EPA, 2019).
