Glossary:

Anaerobic: An organism or tissue living in the absence of air or free oxygen (Merriam Webster, 2020)

 

Biodiversity Hotspots:  A biogeographic area notable for sustaining significant levels of Biological Diversity, and at ghrave risk of losing that biodiversity (Sciencedaily, 2020)

 

Biotic Potential: The capacity of a population of organisms to increase in numbers under Optimum Environmental conditions (Merriam Webster, 2020)

 

Clutch: The group of eggs produced by a bird or reptile (Britannica, 2020)

Ephemeral: Lasting for a very short time (Merriam Webster, 2020)

​

Eutrophication: Eutrophication is caused by an excess in nutrients, and can lead to algal blooms that deplete an area of its oxygen, and have been known to suffocate fish. (NOAA, 2020)

Fragmentation: The breaking of habitat into smaller isolated pieces, leading to a lack of genetic diversity

​

Genetic Diversity:  Both the vast numbers of different species as well as the diversity within a species (United Nations, 1992)

​

Natural Succession: The process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring (Merriam Webster, 2020)

​

Shallow Spring-Fed Fens: Peat-forming wetlands that receive nutrients from sources other than precipitation (Mike Gracz, 2011)

 

Sphagnum Bogs: A bog containing sphagnum and usually other characteristic and acid-tolerant plants (National Geographic, 2020)

​

Seepage: The slow escape of a liquid or gas through porous material or small holes (Britannica, 2020)
