TERMS DEFINED

Endangered Species Act (ESA)

key legislation for both domestic and international conservation, aims to provide a framework to conserve and protect endangered and threatened species and their habitats.

biodiversity

Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you'll find in one area—the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world. Each of these species and organisms work together in ecosystems, like an intricate web, to maintain balance and support life.

k-selected and r-selected species

The terms r-selection and K-selection are used by ecologists to describe the growth and reproduction strategies of organisms. r-selected species have a high growth rate but low survivability (“cheap” offspring) K-selected species have a low growth rate but high survivability (“expensive” offspring)

Construction of an impoundment involves diversion of streams, draining of natural wetlands, in order to create artificial systems that control water flow. These artificial systems include long dams, wells, and pumps.
