Rockhopper Recovery Plans

What's Being Done?

While there is no singular, large effort towards the conservation of the Northern rockhopper penguins, small laws and policies have been implemented. Programs for education, awareness, and rescue raining also exist.

Many conservatory actions still need to be taken in order to protect and restore the remaining penguin population. There should be actions taken to increase protection levels of breeding sites, design land management plans for the islands, monitor the potential introduction of invasive species, educate tourists in order to minimize disturbances, designate marine ibas; aswell as well as research on genetics, threats, and livelihoods of the birds. (IUCN red list, 2020)

Protective Legislation

All breeding colonies in the Tristan group are protected under the Conservation of Native Organisms and Natural Habitats (Tristan da Cunha) Ordinance (2006), (IUCN Red List, 2020) The Seabirds of Amsterdam and St. Paul islands are protected by law, aswell (IUCN red list, 2020)
