Glossary 

Archipelago  - a group of islands

Biome - a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g. forest or tundra.

Commercial fishing -  the taking of fish and other seafood and resources from oceans, rivers, and lakes for the purpose of marketing them. 

Ecosystem - a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

Egging - The process of poaching eggs for food or sport

Food chain -  a hierarchical series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.

Foraging predators - A predator which moves throughout its habitat to find its prey 

Functional Diversity -  a component of biodiversity that generally concerns the range of things that organisms do in communities and ecosystems

Genetic Variability - The tendency of individual genetic characteristics in a population to vary from one another

Greenhouse gas - a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation, e.g., carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons.

Organism - an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.

Range - The environmental conditions, or geographic area, within which a species occurs.

Species richness - the number of species within a defined region
