Calm Waters
  • Anthropogenic- environmental issues caused by human actions

  • Arribada- literally means arrival by sea, when Kemp Ridleys go in large groups to the beach to nest

  • Captive breeding program-keeping plants and animals in a controlled environment

  • Degradation- Natural environment compromised in some way

  • Endangered Species Act (ESA)- Used to prevent species extinction, and recover endangered species

  • Eroded- gradually wearing away soil, rock, etc.

  • Fishing Trawlers- A type of fishing where large nets (trawls) are dragged through the water

  • Fossil Fuel- natural fuel from dead plants and animals

  • Ghost net- abandoned or lost fishing nets that float around the ocean causing injury/death to ocean creatures

  • Great Pacific Garbage Patch- large collection of marine debris in the Pacific ocean

  • HIPPCO- Threats to biodiversity: Habitat Loss and degradation, Invasive Species, Population Growth, Pollution, Climate Change, and Overexploitation

  • Indicator species- Species that indicate issues happening at a greater level in the ecosystem

  • Invasive species- non-native species that takes over and negatively impacts the native environment

  • Migratory- seasonal movement of animals

  • Offspring- an animals child/young

  • Overexploitation- aka harvesting a limited resource to a point it can’t return to normal levels

  • Prey- an animal that is hunted by other animals for food

  • Threatened- a grouping of critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable

  • Turtle Exclusion Devices TED’s- Allow turtles to escape from commercial fishing nets
